Look at Me (poem)

I don't want to be
Your declaration of independence
I don't want to be
Your father confessor
Or your counselor
Or your therapist
I don't want to be a substitute
For your husband
Or your dad
I don't want to be
A stand-in
For the brother you never had
I don't want to be
A player
In the script you write
And direct
I don't want to be
The fulfillment of your
Emotional or sexual fantasies
And to tell you the truth
I don't even know how
To be any of those things
Those desires are yours
I only know how
To be me
But deep inside
I am everything
You want me to be
And if you let me
I will love you
But if you can't
Please tell me
And release me
So I can walk away
To find someone
Who can
